Now the Day is Over – The Life and Times of Sabine Baring-Gould 1834-1924

Rev. Harold Kirk-Smith MA PhD

During his 90 years he achieved much by dint of hard work and perhaps great faith. Although his name may not be well known some of his achievements are for example, Onward Christian Soldiers, his best known hymn. He was also the author of well over 100 books including many historical and theological works, travel books, and collections of folk songs of the south-west. With little idea of what path to follow, and with remarkably little theological preparation he was ordained deacon. He began his ministry in 1864 in Horbury Brig where he married Grace Taylor, a mill girl in the village; then at Dalton in Yorkshire then East Mercea until at the age of 47 he returned to his roots at Lew Trenchard in Devon.
