Little Will and Clink Carrot - launch 26.01.17.

Written on Saturday 14th January 2017

The day is drawing near - New paperback out on 26th January 2017. Little Will and Clink Carrot - the first of the Everton trilogy - is based on fact and describes the life of Little Will, born in Lincoln in 1875 to a somewhat truculent, tough, undertaker/carpenter father.

The author, Peter Gaston (now in his eighties), is 'Little Will's' grandson. There are emotive tales of the old workhouse, workshops and barracks along withthe more light-hearted events such as the fun of the annual fair and his friendship and scrapes with Clink Carrot

I will add a few excerpts from the book over the next few weeks to give a flavour of this 'can't put it down' book!

..."Herbert noticed that Josiah's glass was not quite filled to the top and hastened to remedy the omission.
I am given to understand that you have removed the mortal remains of my client to the workhouse chapel when she lies in a cheap coffin without even a candle to light her departure from this world."...

..."Herbert's eyes ran slowly down the paper, his face becoming redder and redder as he got further down the sheet. By the time he had reached the last line his face was almost scarlet and he seemed to be having difficulty in breathing. He fumed and spluttered, his cheeks swelling and puffing, but no words seemed able to emerge.
Suddenly, in one furious explosion of sound, he screamed 'What the hell's this? I told you I'd pay for the repair of your bloody shop, not to rebuild the bloody thing!'" ...

... "Why, he said, 'much as I love and cherish Mrs Carrot, if she was to 'arm these little children of mine, why, I'd give 'er a good hidin' and no mistake.  If any man was to 'arm any one of 'em, I'd tie his windpipe in a knot so tight he'd go blue and black in the face!'
Henry screwed his huge hands together until his knuckles cracked and Will had a mental picture of Martha suspended from them and turning a bright shade of purple.  Strangely, it didn't upset him one bit."...

..."The journey lasted just over an hour, the slow train stopping at a host of smaller stations, but then Boston Stump came in sight on the horizon and they stood at the window as the train drew slowly through the points and sidings and into Boston.

Occasionally above the houses they could see the tip of a tall ship's mast and on the incoming evening breeze there was a distinct salty tang, mixed with not a little of the odour of fish from the busy fish docks.

Eventually they made their way up West Street into the High Street, then over the Town Bridge and into the Market Place.  Here they sat on a wall and discussed what they should do next."...
