Twentieth Century Lincolnshire

Edited by Dennis R Mills The Society of Lincolnshire History and Archaeology

This book reviews many aspects of the county's history from about 1900 to the early 1970s: population change and urban growth, farming, industry, the social impact of the RAF, holidaying and conservation on the coast, the early days of planning and the surburban ideal, local and constituency politics, education from board schools to comprehensives, religion and spiritual life.  The last chapter presents the annals of one village - Welbourn - partly through the innovatory use of school records.

Did you know that Louth was represented by the first English-born woman MP to take her seat, that Lincoln was once a major centre of aircraft manufacture and that Gainsborough made submarines?  Lindsey County Council made planning and conservation history with their Sandhills Act, Lincolnshire Farmers began the NFU and pioneered new crops, especially sugar beet, potatoes, bulbs and vegetables for canning and freezing.

Pictures include stills from cine film of Boston and Spalding, the Luftwaffe's view of Lincoln in 1939, a painting of a bombed church in Grimsby and miners digging iron ore by hand at Scunthorpe.
