COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR - AVAILABLE ON REQUEST

A fine unit history, compiled by Hull historian and teacher Barrie Barnes, of the 50th Northumbrian Division and its starring role in the 1943 invasion of Sicily, and the D-Day and Normandy campaign the following year.

The Northumbrians won fame for the prominent part they played in many battles - from the ‘holding action’ at Arras during the retreat of May 1940, to the final liberation of Europe in 1945. Barnes here describes the campaigns sandwiched between those two milestones - the invasion and conquest of Sicily in 1943, and the 50th’s role in D-Day and the Normandy campaign the following year.

The author incorporates the stories of many individual soldiers and officers within the wider framework of the Division’s part in the general Allied order of battle. Although augmented by drafts from Scotland, Wales, Lancashire and Yorkshire, the 50th always retained their tough, Northumbrian and Durham character. This absorbing book, with its many illustrations, is a moving tribute to these men.
