Robert Grosseteste (c.1170-1253) was one of the outstanding figures of medieval scholarship. From humble origins, he rose to become one of the earliest chancellors of Oxford University and ultimately Bishop of Lincoln. His writings ranged widely in the fields of science and medicine, theology and philosophy; at the same time he worked hard to make ancient Greek texts known through translation. As a bishop and pastor he sought to use his intellectual talents in the service of the Church, embracing the reforming ideals of his age and the spirit of the young and dynamic Franciscan Order.
James McEvoy has written extensively on Robert Grosseteste and his thought. This book offers a clear and accessible introduction to one of the greatest medieval bishops of Lincoln.
