The farmers of Lincolnshire are an independent-minded, hardworking group. Over the centuries they have altered the county to fit their needs by cutting down forests, draining bogs, taming rivers and pushing back the sea to create a rich and diverse agricultural landscape.
Change has always been a feature of farming but that which took place during the 20th century was almost certainly the biggest and most far-reaching ever experienced. The farming community witnessed the introduction of mechanisation and a drastic reduction in its workforce, altering the face of farming completely.
Before the memories are lost forever, author, Alan Stennett has taken the time to talk to the local people who make their living from the land. He examines the changes that have taken place over the last century and, using first-hand accounts and a fascinating collection of contemporary photographs, he tells the story of farming life in Lincolnshire – the conditions, the work, the people and the humour.
Alan Stennett lives in Woodhall Spa. As the descendent of at least four generations of local farmers, an agricultural journalist and the producer of Farming Today and Lincolnshire Farming for BBC Radio, he has many contacts and friends in the farming industry. He is also author of 'Nobbut a Yellerbelly!' and 'Lost Railways of Lincolnshire'.
