Dennis Mills, the son of a gardener who grew up in the estate village at Winthrope, near Newark then at Canwick, outside Lincoln. Read geography in Nottingham and after learning Russian during his National Service returned to Nottingham as a Demonstrator and Temporary Assistant Lecturer. Eventually becoming Senior Lecturer for the Open University. He is best known in his field of work regarding the extension of the open/closed classification of English villages in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He wrote extensively on Canwick and the Sibthorp family.
