Mistresses of English medieval princes were generally obscure or faded into obscurity. Why then did Katherine become famous and remain so?
This booklet studies her life within the aristocracy of late 14th century England.
Although we lack the information we need to conjure up the personality of Katherine Swynford. We only have the hostile opinions of men who knew her by repute, on the scandal she caused. We do know she was prolific; producing sturdy babies who grew up to be vigorous, talented and forceful. As a governess, she had mixed success but as a mistress, she was brilliant. Her achievements in marrying her princely lover (John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the wealthiest and most powerful noble in England) and seeing their children legitimised were exceptional.
An incredible insight into the convoluted lives of the rich and powerful elite.
