Guernsey As It Used to Be is a portrait of the island during the Victorian era. Its author George Hugo, was born in Guernsey in 1862, and describes the changes he saw in the island from his childhood until this book was originally published in 1933.

A fascinating insight with photos depicting scenes such as the wreck of the Dunsinane in 1904, Fire-fighting at the Quay in 1938, Mrs Nicolle’s shop in the ‘Skyscrapers’ at Le Petit Carrefour, a tram and houses in front of The Town Church before their demolition in 1913 and the mailboat
entering the Harbour. All is brought to life together with stories of the Town's familiar characters and how they spent their time.
