As students of Lutterworth Schools we are writing this book to further advance the knowledge of Frank Whittle and his achievement in inventing, designing and manufacturing the jet engine that has changed the world.
Frank, born in Ladywood, Coventry, on 1st June 1907 spent many years in Lincolnshire. Early research for his jet engine led to his being asked to leave his first workshop – because his experiments were too dangerous – taking refuge in a disused foundry in Lutterworth.
Whittle’s energy, enthusiasm and attention to detail was boundless. He would travel to Edinburgh to visit Laidlaw and then return to Sheffield to see the forging of the turbine wheels then on to Slough to see the compressor being forged and all the time he was concerned about the financial position but, despite all his worries, the jet engine was beginning to emerge.
Whilst the students all recognised the name of Frank Whittle as being associated with Lutterworth. Having completed this project we understand why the association has been so important and hope it will also help you understand.
