Heritage Lincolnshire has gained ownership of this Grade ll listed building in Boston and urgent repairs are underway. This early eighteenth century building has a fascinating history, as the first private bank in Lincolnshire was established here by William Garfitt* in 1754. The High Street in Boston in the mid 18th century was the commercial centre of the town and local merchants were prospering from the increase in exports to other areas of the country. The wealth of the area in this period can still be seen in the quality of the historic buildings on the High Street and 116 is of exceptional significance.
The aim is to repair the building and create a new community hub, with various organisations occupying offices within the main building and new social enterprise units within the rear yard. The concrete yard and commercial buildings will be demolished and it is hoped that a community garden will be established, offering much needed green space to local residents.
Heritage Lincolnshire is working in partnership with Boston Borough Council, Lincolnshire Community Foundation and the High Street South Neighbourhood Group to ensure the success of the project. Funding has been received from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
